15x blue berries 57 cals
5x squares of dark lindt chocolate 250 cals

total dinner: 1974 (oopsy just ate all my calories in one meal and possible drank my body weight in champagne)

total Sunday calories: 2944

I love Sunday eating the best, this is me, at my best eating (and drinking) whatever I want, whenever I want, I wish I could eat cupcakes and pumpkin bread everyday...

So what is the point of all this weekend calorie counting and sharing it with you?
Well I think it's important that you are honest with yourself about what you really eat
A lot of Secret Eaters don't count outside their main meals and don't consider things like 2 tbs of butter on their toast containing nearly more calories then the toast it self

I probably underestimated my daily in take by around 1000 cals a day - which is a huge amount when you think about the daily recommendation for me only being around 1500
Obviously, I don't eat like this everyday... maybe I would surprise myself if I counted a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday?

My main weekend weakness? Alcohol
It made up nearly a third of my calorie in take for the 3 days
...I don't work hard all week to not enjoy a drink on the weekend (or five like on Sunday)

I think it's important to be aware, but hey, as Gwyneth Paltrow said, 'It's all good!'

about 100 grms of hot chips 160 cals
(with a little sauce and mayo) 50 cals

total extra calories I ingested whilst under the influence: 440 cals

total calories for Saturday night: 2227 cals

we walked about 1km home again (I like to give myself points for exercise, even though this proabably burnt off 2 single chips...)

I'm starting to notice two key things about my weekend eating habits ...
a. I eat all my calories at the wrong end of the day and like many 'secret eaters' I think "I've been good all day" - so therefore I deserve to treat myself at the end of the day with a huge carb binge...

b. drinking = eating crap

Secret Eaters, part 1

The other night I watched a very interesting show on the Lifestyle You channel called 'Secret Eaters'
It was hosted by Anna Richardson who has also been a host on 'Super Size vs Super Skinny' on the same channel

Basically Anna and her team of private investigators bug your house, put a camera on your fridge and follow you to McDonalds to count how many calories you are really eating -
The people on the show are in total diet denial and are not sure why they are getting fatter and fatter when they 'don't really snack' or 'only eat salad'

I did feel sad for the lady last night who insisted she only ate salads but forgot to mention the 3 heaped tablespoons of full fat mayo she used as a dressing. Rookie mistake. Seriously that shit is like the Devil's food... She was consuming something like 300 extra calories without even realising it..

The happy snackers all kept food diaries and according to hers she was only eating around 1800 calories a day, which is the recommended calorie in take for a woman, if you want to maintain your current weight.
Turns out after the extra dollops of mayo, excessive amounts of wine at a dinner party and things like licking the yogurt lid, poor Jill was consuming something more like 2500 calories a day
That's and extra 700 calories that she didn't even know she was ingesting, scary shit

I started to shift uncomfortably on the couch and avoided eye contact with Moe, (my dog) when Anna started talking about all the nasty secret calories that are found in alcohol. Ok confession time, I am in a bit of alcohol calorie diet denial myself..I never count them. After googling 'how many calories are in a shot of vodka' I felt very shocked (and a little betrayed) to find that there was somewhere between 70-100. It's not really a huge amount but denial me thought that there weren't any.. (Different websites show a different number and I suppose it depends on the brand?)
70-100 nasty calories in just the vodka alone...
Luckily I drink mine with soda, the people on the show were drinking things like full malt whiskey with coke, big pints of Guinness and full yeasty beer. Telling myself this made me feel a little better but did make me think, how many calories do I really consume in a day? How many times have I licked the yoghurt lid?

So I have decided to keep a food diary and go all PI on myself over the next couple of days.. Starting with the weekend. (ARGHH!)
I will eat as weekend normally as possible and if it is ingested, it will be counted. I want to find out what I am really eating (and drinking) and what its adds up to; because if you ask me now I would probably tell you that like Jill, I just eat salad all the time

DAY 1
Friday
Breakfast
shot coffee 1 cal (off to a great start!)
200ml skim milk 70 cals
100grms egg whites 49 cals
50grms of mixed onions/capsicum/mushrooms, including a little oil 20 cals

total breakfast: 140 cals

Lunch
100grms of tuna 160 cals
100grms of tabouli 115 cals

total lunch: 275 cals

Dinner
5 shots of vodka (with soda water) 375 cals
50ml ginger cordial 131 cals
5 mint leaves 3 cals
juice from one lime 7 cals
1 piece of bruschetta 100 cals
about 250grms of salad (lettuce, tomato, red cabbage, cucumber, olives) 70 cals
2 tablespoons of italian salad dressing 80 cals
2 crumbed and fried mushrooms with cheese and tomato sauce (yum) 260 cals
2 pieces of thin crust pizza with smoked salmon, spinach, tomato, olives 250 cals

total dinner: 1276 cals

..later that night (It gets a little hairy now)
2x vodka and soda with fresh lime  164 cals
shot of tequila (sucked on the lemon) 100 cals
shot of frangelico 70 cals
ate two lemon wedges 7 cals
corner of a brownie 20 cals

walked home with a group (yes good, exercise, go me)
1x cup of tea 2 cals
ate about 8 breakfast biscuits with tea (oops) 442 cals

extra calories: 805

Total calories today: 2496
About 696 over my recommended daily amount
I actually would have come in at about the normal recommended amount had I not ate all those breakfast biscuits

You can see why someone like Jill or myself, would think that breakfast biscuits are 'healthy' and have less calories then just eating a chocolate, (what I really wanted to eat in the first place) but in reality they are full of high energy ingredients and calories that you maybe wouldn't count... which makes sense because they are for breakfast and you're probably not meant to eat 8 of them...

....to be continued

Alcohol and secret calories...

Don't get us wrong, we love a drink as much as the next blogger
Whenever we are researching a new diet to trial, we are always waiting for it to read, 'yes! drinking allowed!' Which long term, would make diets a lot easier to stick to...
and just in case you're wondering, no diet (that we've found) says drinking is ok

Bacardi rum, 30ml 70 cals
Vodka, (Smirnoff) 30ml 74 cals
Cider, 200mls 75 cals
Light Beer, 2.2% 375ml 94 cals
Red wine, 200ml 133 cals
White wine, dry 200ml 135 cals
Bloody Mary 140 cals
Champagne, brut, 200ml 170 cals
A Mojito, 180 cals
White wine, sweet 200ml 189 cals
A Martini, (straight up) 200cals
Gin and Tonic, 200 cals
A Cosmo, 213 cals
A standard vodka cruiser or other alcopop drink, 237cals
A Martini, (with olives) 250 cals
Vodka and Cranberry, 200 cals
Rum and Coke, 240 cals
Expresso Martini, 430 cals

It seems that there are a lot of 'secret' calories in alcohol that many of us don't count -

Enjoy a good espresso martini!

The Cabbage Soup Diet

'The Cabbage Soup' diet aka 'Death by Cleanse'
This fast fix fad diet only lasts for 7 days and promises weight loss of up to 5kg in one week!
'Wow!' You say, 'sign me up, its a miracle!' I said, 'and it's only for one week!'
Let me tell you something, one week lasts a looonnnnnng time when you're starving hungry and start eating your finger nails for sustenance...

Celebrities that have survived the Cabbage Soup diet or as some say 'cleanse' (to try and make it sound more fashion) include Liz Hurley, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jamie Pressly
I really don't know how Buffy managed to slay any vampires without carbs but hey, she looks great

So here's the deal,
Make heinous soup by combining a whole cabbage, 6 brown onions, 2 green capsicums, 3 carrots, a whole head of celery, 1L of water and vegetable stock
There are different variations of the recipe but none that are any more exciting or bearable then the other

Day one - Eat only fruit, all the fruit you want except banana
Drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, cranberry juice, and water
Eat as much soup as you like

This is a picture actually posted on the mother ship site
......just in case you need help identifying a peeled banana

The problem with this diet is that the soup tastes revolting and 'as much as you want' is probably none at all
I tried to eat at least one bowl a day...
It also makes you fart all the time, yay

Breakfast -
1x apple
1/2 rockmelon

Lunch -
Bowl of soup
2x apple
1x pear

Dinner -
1x bowl of soup
4x raspberries

I went to bed feeling totally unsatisfied and empty but positive about some major weight loss that should miraculously take place when I woke up in the morning...

Day two - Stuff, stuff, stuff yourself!! Eat as much as you want or fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter at the end of the day
Eat as much soup as you like but no fruit today

Breakfast -
I skipped breakfast because I couldn't stomach the soup or vegetables first thing in the morning

Lunch -
Soup!
1x celery sticks
2x handful of spinach leaves
1x carrot

Dinner -
Soup.... again

This is the day that really pissed me off -
No one likes to "stuff, stuff, stuff!" themselves with tomato, celery, lettuce (with no dressing) and carrot sticks...
Seriously I felt like brachiosaurus trying to eat my body weight in leaves - and I was still hungry
No amount of empty salad is going to fill me up
I also don't think a big bland potato with lashings of butter is much of a 'reward'
You also don't have any energy or will power to cook the bastard, so I didn't bother
I went to bed at 8pm (hungry) so I didn't have to think about food

Day three - Combine days one and two, eat as much fruit and veg as you like, no potato
Eat the soup at least once today

Breakfast -
1x apple

Lunch -
soup

Dinner -
soup

This was the day that really started to mess with me
I woke up lethargic and angry - even though I had had an early night
I found it really hard to do basic actions like shower, think... talk
I was so over eating pointless amounts of fruit and veg that I tended to avoid eating at all
I nearly threw up after dinner from the smell of the soup and it still makes me gag now whenever I think about it
I also had to go to a very stressful and important meeting that night and ended up nearly crying, not making sense and getting angry at everyone because they had bought pizza and wine along to rub in my face
To top it all off I got my period and didn't know if I was going to die from the pain or hunger
Basic senses like seeing and happiness started to leave my body as though a dementor had come and sucked my soul from my body -

I hope to never experience this day again

Determined not to throw in the towel after day three, I left the girls to drink and went to bed at 8.30pm

Day four - Eat as many as 8 bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you like, along with your soup. This day is suppose to lessen your desire for sweets

Breakfast -
banana smoothie with 2 bananas and 500ml of skim milk
1x skinny flat white

Lunch
2x bananas

Dinner
banana smoothie with 1 banana and 250ml of milk

I'm happy to say that I am still alive and I woke up to the day I had been looking forward to the most -
It was so good to get up and drink something that actually satisfied me and gave me energy
It doesn't sound like a lot of 'food' but compared to what I was eating the previous 3 days it was a banana flavoured God send

Friends went out that night but I didn't think I would be much fun, following them around like a pale, hungry, zombie

I couldn't bring myself to soup today, I was on such a high from the bananas and couldn't bare the thought of eating it

It's like they (the Cabbage Cult Lords) give you this day so you don't eat your arm - I was getting pretty desperate..

Day five - You may have up to 500gms and a large tin or up to 6 fresh tomatoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water on this day to flush the uric acid from your body. Eat the soup at least once today

Breakfast
100grms tuna
1x tomato
1x skinny fw

Lunch
180grms of tuna

Dinner
180grms of tuna
1x tomato
4x vodka and soda with fresh lemon (not allowed)

Firstly, who the f*ck eats a nice big tin of cold tomatoes? Was this some sort of test to see if you were stupid enough?
I don't eat beef or 'broiled' chicken either, whatever the hell that is (it sounds gross,) so I substituted both for tinned tuna
I love tuna and use to eat it in the good old days, so it was nice to have some comforting, nolstagic food.... except now I am starving and it seems to fall on an empty stomach
But hey, I'm not complaining because at least I 'm getting some protein and my vision is returning

Everyday this stupid diet is telling me to 'eat the soup, eat the soup, join us, eat the soooouuuppp!' like the lost souls from the other side of the Cabbage Cult
I chucked the remaining soup in the bin and nearly vomitted on top of it
I'll finish the eating plan without it...

Day six - Eat beef and vegetables today. You can even have 2-3 steaks with fresh vegetables or salad. NO BAKED POTATO. Eat your soup at least once

Breakfast
1x skinny flat white

Lunch
180grms of tuna

Dinner
1 piece of salmon
salad with no dressing
birthday cake (oops)
5x vodka and soda with fresh lime

I woke up tired this morning, probably from the vodka, suprisingly I'm not very hungry at all
I need a coffee first thing in the morning though... which I'm probably not suppose to have but I had to work

It was a friends birthday hence the cake and vodkas
I think I did pretty well to just have the salmon for dinner though and the salad with the no dressing!
It's really hard to go out on this diet, especially to a birthday party and not eat and drink what everyone else is
I would've felt rude if I didn't drink or eat cake

When you're on the cabbage soup diet, you often feel like you have to over compensate in personalty and enthusiasm because the food you are eating is so bland it actually makes other people feel a little bored watching you

Start weight - 70kg
End weight - 66.7kg
Total loss - 3.3kg

Was it worth the weight loss?
Thats a tough question, the results were good but I feel as though I have been abused in some way
I don't recommend this diet, I personally couldn't stomach the soup past day 3, so I don't know If I even did it 'properly.'
I think if I had stuck to it better, I would have lost more weight as the diet promised but would have also compromised my happiness even more

The Cabbage Soup Cult doesn't recommend that you do this diet longer then the 7 days and 'no psychical activity' is recommended (because you would actually die)

The Cabbage Soup Diet is extreme and very tough to stick to - it's also gross
But hey if you like being dizzy, grumpy, blind, antisocial and want to look like Jamie Pressly, go for it

Jaimee Pressly went on this diet to loose weight for her 30th birthday party
She completed the death cleanse not once, but twice, in a row
She lost 32lbs (14.5kg) in two weeks;
which is considered 'unhealthy' and 'dangerous' by the medical authorities

I think she should be sent some kind of award for living
Well she gets an awesome body but it was definitely earnt, not given
She has a great box gap

"I lost the first 32 pounds (14.5kg) [of baby weight] by my 30th birthday, which we celebrated in Vegas. We had pool parties, and I was not about to be chunky. I did the cabbage soup diet twice in a row. It lasts six days, and you eat cabbage soup three to four times a day. But one day, you can also eat up to eight bananas."

She's definitely sugar coating it for you, its sucks.

“Every girl is expected to have caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama and doll tits. This is why everyone is struggling.” -Tina Fey

The Raw Diet aka the Gwyneth Paltrow

I am writing this on day two of next weeks diet, so if something doesn't make sense, please forgive me, I'm dying by cleanse over here... I'm also not feeling very funny

I had heard that Gwyneth Paltrow leads a pretty out there and eccentric life style but it wasn't until Matilda and I studied her a little closer did the craziness (and the hunger) start to rear their ugly heads
Apparently Gwyn doesn't use deodorant or soap and has all her clothing steam cleaned 3 times, to really get that stink out
She also uses a special clay toothpaste as not to ingest any harmful fluoride into her pure system

At first I thought, 'thats nice, Conservationist Gwyn is using her powers for good and doing something for the enviroment!'
Er, apparently not, according to a source, Gwyn has a fashion 'seasonal must have' list (which exceeds $200,000) and on there, somewhere is Valentino's rock stud python trapeze bag, which is $5,500....and made from pythons
Her weekly grocery shopping is over $300; which is kind of ironic for someone who restricts most things found at the supermarket....
For a special treat Gwyn will indulge in half a date or fig...
Right, so Gwynth's motives are purely vanity and self preservation

Gwyneth is also the author of her own cookbooks where she is kind enough to share all her tasty vegan and raw food friendly meals with us mere mortals
She often 'detoxes' from her usual crazy eating self, (one half a date too many I'd say) and goes on her strict raw food cleanse
On her blog, Gwyn proudly says that husband Chris and the kids Moses, 6 and Apple, 8, also participate happily in a good raw detox too... er, right
Apparently Apple really enjoys an apple..

"It's All Good" says Gwyn
What is that?
Some sort of sick joke?

Matilda had heard about Gwyn's Raw Cleanse and all the fantastic health benefits that it had in store for her, so she was eager to try...

What can you eat?
Anything raw or simple
"Micro foods"
Infinite salad
Fruits
Nuts
Raw veggies
Raw fish and meat (yay)
Herbal tea and water
(Gwyneth recommends you drink at least 3L of water a day to flush out any nasty toxins that might be hiding in the salad)

What's not allowed?
coffee, (boo)
alcohol, (boo)
artificial sweetener
banana chips
olives
glazed pineapple pieces
Cooked, frozen, dipped, dried, fried, steamed, boiled pretty much anything that makes food taste better... not allowed, not allowed, not allowed!!

Gwyneth's basic rule is it should only be cut and washed before ingested
She also doesn't eat after 8pm and exercises using the Tracey Anderson method for 2 hours a day...

She also has time to work, go to Pilates and be a mum

Eat like that, look like this -

Need a drink to relax, so had 3 vodkas, (points awarded for raw lime)

Gwyneth has said that she prefers to live in Europe rather then America because there are too many fat people in the US consuming cooked and fatty foods around her
She says that there is a "bad energy" in her homeland and she's scared of picking up the local's bad eating habits

Day Five

Waking up feeling angry at apples and at a lack of variety in the diet, luckily is the last day

Breakfast
1 apple
1/2 a banana

1 detox juice (with beetroot, celery, apple, ginger)
1 passionfruit
1 mandarin

Went home to bed

The results:
End weight: 72.8kg
Total loss: 4kg
After two days of normal eating and drinking: 73.7kg
Matilda put a kilo back on after just 2 days of normal 'healthy' eating....

The first morning off the diet she had a bowl of porridge and a boiled egg that made her stomach turn

"Could you stick to this diet long term?" I asked Matilda
"You can't function, you can't do your job properly and you have no social life because everyone else is enjoying food -
If it was a matter of life and death... or maybe for a day"

I bet that dress needed a good steam...
